SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) — The Gila National Forest will begin selling Christmas tree permits on Nov. 25.

Forest officials say for this year’s tree cutting period, people can start purchasing permits four days earlier than normal. This will allow for cutting during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Permits sell for $5 each with a limit of one permit per household. Free permits are available for aromatic pinon trees. Any tree species up to 10 feet may be cut.

Tree cutting is not allowed within wilderness areas, river and stream areas or areas within 200 feet of paved roads and developed recreation sites.

The permits will be available at the forest’s ranger district offices.
